Celebrating the 150th Derby

When I moved to Louisville, Kentucky many years ago as a middle school student, I had never heard of the Derby that many people would mention when I told them where we were going. Now, after living here in the city I have called home for many more years than I will admit Derby is as normal to me as any holiday or season. There is the opening celebration of Thunder over Louisville in April, weeks before the Derby. The three weeks prior to the first Saturday in May are filled with events that mark the eventual running of the Derby. Balloon races, bed races, foot races, steamboat races, races by servers with trays filled with full wine glasses, called the Run for the Rose, – many things other than horses are raced during this celebrated season. This year is the 150th Derby or Run for the Roses. For Moss Hill, Derby is sometimes busier than Valentine’s Day and thankfully Mother’s Day and Derby flow from one to the other. With our Louisville, Kentucky roots we have ALL kinds of Derby, Horse, Bourbon and Kentucky-themed gift items. Check out all that we have to offer for corporate gifts, souvenirs and Derby party favors.

Loving the skin you're in

You’ve likely read that the skin is the largest organ in the body and the largest sense organ, much bigger than your eyes, ears or nose. It covers your entire body, and the nerve endings in your skin help you feel everything whether it be hot, cold, damp, rough, smooth, hard or soft. It protects you from germs and infection and can heal itself! It even replaces itself about every 27 days. I think our skin is something we can take for granted. We must realize just how amazing it is AND how important it is to take care of it. Isn’t it interesting that the simple things we do to care for our skin are quite as basic as cleaning it and moisturizing it? Why not give your skin a treat and wash it with Moss Hill soap, available in 14 different fragrances in a bar or liquid style soap? After it’s clean and smelling lovely, why not moisturize it with our Dry Skin Relief or Satiny Soft Body Butter? It is important to care for the skin that does so much for you! You and your skin deserve it!

Where is Moss Hill?

We regularly get the question – Where is Moss Hill? Very often we are standing in our shop in Louisville, Kentucky and our answer is ‘Right here! We make everything here in the Butchertown Market, right behind this wall!’. Then the conversation turns to ‘where did Moss Hill get its name’? The name came from one of the founders who had grown up near an area called Moss Hill near Woodford County, Kentucky. The original founders agreed upon that name back in 2001 and chose a dragonfly as the brand mark in our logo. That name and logo symbol remain the same to this day, along with the commitment to create quality, handmade bath and body products.

How to Pick the Perfect Customized Candle for a Gift

As the holidays approach, we start thinking about unique gifts for our loved ones. One of the most popular gifts to give is a personalized candle.

It's a thoughtful and distinctive way to show someone you care while giving them something they can enjoy for years. But with so many different types of candles, how do you know which is the best option for your special someone? This blog will cover the basics of how to pick the perfect customized candle for a gift.

Type of Candle

Candles can come in many styles, scents, and colors, making it possible to find one perfect for the recipient. It is essential to select the correct size candle to ensure it fits appropriately in the space available.

Choosing a candle that fits within your budget but is still of high quality is important. Quality candles are typically more expensive, but they can also last much longer and provide a more enjoyable experience for the recipient.

Choose the Right Scent

Choosing a candle with the right scent can make the gift even more special. If you know the recipient's favorite scent, this is an easy choice. If not, take the time to sample different scents and find one you think they'll like. Many candle stores also offer scent testers so you can try out different scents before you buy.

The Personality of The Recipient

Do they prefer a traditional or modern look? Do they like bold, bright colors or prefer subtle, neutral shades? What kind of fragrances do they enjoy? Are they drawn to more natural scents such as lavender or rose, or do they prefer sweet, fruity aromas? Once you've determined the type of candle they would like, you can start to narrow down your options.

You'll also want to consider the recipient's lifestyle. If they have a busy home life or work schedule, they may appreciate a longer-burning candle that is easy to light and extinguishes. If they are more of a homebody, they prefer a cozy scent that will fill the room and create a relaxing atmosphere.

Consider The Occasion

The occasion is the main factor that will determine what type of candle you could pick. Depending on the occasion, different types of candles may be more appropriate. Moss Hill offers 6 oz, 8 oz and custom scented candles.

For instance, if you're looking for a candle for a birthday, choose a scented, colorful, and fun candle that's sure to make the recipient smile. If you're looking for a candle for a wedding, a more sophisticated and elegant candle with a neutral scent would be more appropriate. If the candle is for a special occasion like a baby shower or a graduation, choose a candle that's specific to that event.

Think About the Location

The person you're buying the candle for lives in a particular geographic location; you could consider scents associated with that area. For example, if they live near the beach, you could consider a candle with a light, refreshing ocean scent. If they live in a mountain area, you could choose a candle with a woodsy pine scent.

Conclusion

Picking the perfect personalized scented candle as a gift is not a difficult task. By considering the recipient's likes and dislikes, the occasion, and the budget, you can easily find the perfect candle that everyone will love.

Moreover, a custom candle will add a touch of thoughtfulness to your gift and make it more special. With the variety of scents, finishes, and sizes available, you can find the perfect scented candle that will make the perfect gift for your special someone.

Found the perfect candle for your loved ones? Look no further because Moss Hill offers a wide variety of bath and body products that you’ll love. Shop and be pampered today!

The Surprising Benefits of Burning Soy Candles

We all know that burning candles can help create a cozy atmosphere in our homes, but did you know that burning soy candles can provide some surprising health benefits as well? Soy candles are made from renewable, sustainably-sourced vegetable soy wax, making them a great alternative to traditional paraffin candles. Here’s why soy candles are the best for your health.

1. Soy Wax Candles are Non-Toxic

Soy wax candles are made from natural soybean wax, which is free of any toxic chemicals. This means they don’t emit any harmful fumes or toxins into the air, making them a much healthier choice than traditional paraffin candles.

2. Soy Wax Candles Don’t Contain Paraffin

Paraffin is a petroleum by-product used in many candle waxes. It can produce harmful toxins, such as benzene, which can be harmful to your health. Soy candles do not contain paraffin, making them much safer for your health.

3. Soy Wax Candles Produce Less Soot

One of the biggest benefits of burning soy candles is that they produce significantly less soot than paraffin candles. This means that the air in your home is cleaner, and the risk of soot-related health issues is significantly reduced. Soy candles also burn cooler than paraffin candles, meaning that they are less likely to cause burns if they are knocked over or come into contact with skin.

4. Soy Wax Candles Burn Clean

Paraffin wax candles can produce smoke when they’re burned, which is another health concern. On the other hand, Soy wax candles burn cleaner than paraffin wax candles. This means less residue is left over on the walls and furniture after burning. Soy wax candles also don’t produce black smoke, which can be a problem with paraffin candles.

5. Soy Wax Candles Give a Stronger Scent

Soy wax candles also burn longer than paraffin candles, which means that they can give off a stronger scent for a longer period of time. This is because soy wax has a higher melting point than paraffin wax, which means that it can hold more fragrance oil. The more fragrance oil your candle has, the stronger the scent of the candle will be and the longer it will last, making it more enjoyable for you and your guests.

6. Soy Wax Candles Won't Ruin Your Walls

Paraffin wax candles can leave a residue on walls, ceilings, and furniture when burned. This residue is difficult to clean and can leave your walls looking dull and damaged. Soy wax candles, however, burn cleanly and won’t leave any residue on your walls or furniture. This makes them a better choice if you’re concerned about keeping your walls looking their best.

7. Soy Wax Candles Burn Longer Without Producing too Much Heat

Paraffin wax candles can produce a lot of heat when they burn, which can be dangerous if the candle is left unattended. Soy wax candles, on the other hand, burn at a lower temperature than paraffin candles and don’t produce as much heat. This makes them safer to use and helps to ensure that the candle will burn for a longer period of time without needing to be extinguished.

Conclusion

The health benefits of burning soy candles are remarkable and something that should not be overlooked. Not only are they more eco-friendly and cost-effective, but they can also help improve air quality and reduce the presence of harmful toxins. If you're looking for a way to make your home a healthier place to be, then soy candles are a great option.

Should You Choose Bar Soap or Liquid Soap?

Soap is an essential cleaning agent responsible for cleansing our bodies and homes.

Several customers ask whether they should buy a bar or liquid soap for their business.

While both types of soap can be beneficial, we'll help you decide whether to buy a bar or liquid soap.

Public Opinion on Bar Soap

Some customers think you'll get a higher value for money with bar soap because it lasts longer than body wash. However, some people may think bar soap can cause dry skin. A quality bar soap balances durability, lather quality, and moisturizing ability.

Bar Soap's Current Market

People mostly use bar soap for cleaning, but the recent trend in meditation and mindfulness made these products more attractive for self-care and relaxation. While there's little evidence that soap can do more than clean the body, the current market is also interested in the bar soap's other benefits and potential.

Bar Soap Sustainability

Bar soaps don't have much waste because they don't require a lot of packaging. Some sellers use thin recyclable paper, cardboard, compostable packaging, and product labels.

Unlike other products in a bottle, buyers can see how much product is left and use the bar soap until it's gone. Other packaging forms can be tricky to use every drop since you have to shake, squeeze, or pump out the remaining product.

Public Opinion on Liquid Soap

People usually see liquid soap as a cleaner alternative since the product isn't exposed to dirt and bacteria. However, it’s typically more expensive than bar alternatives.

Liquid Soap's Current Market

Like bar soap, liquid soap goes beyond its cleaning purposes. The industry currently boasts that liquid soap can cleanse, moisturize, and exfoliate. You can also use body washes as a gel or cream.

Liquid Soap's Sustainability

Unlike bar soaps, sellers pack their body washes in plastic bottles. Consumers rarely use up all the products since the bottles are usually translucent. At some point, buyers will inevitably throw away the bottle with the remaining products inside.

Lathering a Clear Decision

Soaps can cleanse your skin, remove bacteria, and are essentials for self-care.

Moss Hill sells and ships custom bar soaps as well as hand and body wash in Louisville, Kentucky. We also have clients across the United States and Canada. Shop at our online store today!

Why Handmade Soap Is Better over the Commercial Kind

Soap is soap, right? Whether hand-made or commercially manufactured, you get the same benefits when choosing one over the other. That’s what we’re going to discuss today. Hand-made is always better, be it ingredients, consciousness, or aesthetics. Here are reasons why hand-made should be your preferred choice.

It Contains Glycerin

Handmade soap is made by combining oils and fats with sodium hydroxide. This chemical reaction, called saponification, results in a soap containing natural oils that can nourish and protect the skin.

On the other hand, mass-produced soap is often made with harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients. Handmade soap is made with natural ingredients and is much better for your skin.

Glycerin is a natural by-product of soap-making and is present in all handmade soaps. It is a humectant, which helps keep the skin moist by drawing moisture from the air. Glycerin is also a natural emollient, which helps soften and smooth the skin.

However, soap made without glycerin can strip the natural oils from your skin, leaving it dry and irritated. Glycerin is often added to moisturizers to help offset this drying effect.

It’s Made Ethically

When soap makers test their soaps, they can easily tell if they are safe to use. This is because they are familiar with the process and ingredients of making the soap. Additionally, they may test the soap on family members and friends to get additional feedback.

Most importantly, they only use high-quality ingredients that are responsibly sourced. This means that workers are paid fairly, work in safe conditions, and no child labor is involved in the supply chain.

It’s Made from Curated Ingredients

Speaking of glycerin, handmade soaps are made with natural ingredients that can benefit your skin. In contrast—as mentioned earlier—mass-produced soaps are made with harsh chemicals and other artificial ingredients that can be harmful.

One instance of an artificially-created soap ingredient is palm oil, a type of vegetable oil derived from palm trees' fruits. It is a popular ingredient in many products, including soap, because it is cheap and effective. However, palm oil is also harmful to wildlife, as it can cause deforestation and habitat loss. As a result, we choose to avoid using palm oil in our soap products.

It’s Made for Customer’s Health and Safety

Abiding by their customer health and safety principles, handmade soapmakers remain aware of workplace health and safety risks and take steps to mitigate them. This includes maintaining a clean and organized workspace, using proper personal protective equipment, and being aware of potential hazards.

It’s Made with Style

Handmade soaps are created with one-of-a-kind designs that you won't find anywhere else. They are developed by talented artisans who put their personal touch on each piece.

It’s Real Soap

Handmade soap is made with natural ingredients and doesn't contain any harsh chemicals. It's also more gentle on your skin and can be customized to your specific needs. Store-bought soap is often made with synthetic ingredients and can be harsh on your skin.

Conclusion

Find artisan pampering products that are great for your health and made with you in mind at Moss Hill. All our soaps, moisturizers, and other products are made in small batches from our recipes, ensuring individual attention through the creation process. Order from our online store today!

Happy 21st Birthday Moss Hill!

You say it’s your birthday, happy birthday to you! - (Like the Beatles sing it)

Celebrate with us this month as we turn 21 years old. Jeanine and I met when we were in middle school, a wee bit more than 21 years ago. ;) At the ripe age of 13 or so, you don’t think too much about what life will be like at 21. Likewise, as I joined Jeanine as her partner at Moss Hill back in 2011, I really didn’t think much about what life would be like 11 years down the road, when the company would turn 21 years old.

Fast forward to 2022 and much has changed, like Jeanine leaving the business in May of 2021, working through a pandemic and a more adversarial societal climate than I can ever remember. YET - much is the same here in the world of Moss Hill, such as our continued focus on making terrific, quality products as a women-owned and run family business. Also, creating a product and shopping environment that are both pleasant and enjoyable. We love to surround ourselves and our shop in lovely things, lovely images and scents. Check out our new scent - Kentucky Lily. It is modeled after the Lily cocktail served at Churchill Downs on Oaks Day - fruity and light and beautiful with notes of blackberry, lemon, orange and cranberry.

A recent addition to the loveliness around us is the new mural added to the Butchertown Market, where we have our storefront. I have to say a big thank you to Often Seen Rarely Spoken for the lovely work they painted and to Andy Blieden, who helped us add another piece of beauty to his building. Here is the mural and our Moss Hill team.

Pictured left to right: Bethany, Devon, Teri, Mary, Pattie and Lyn. To commemorate our birthday we will be running a sale in July so pay close attention to our social media channels.

We cannot say it enough…THANK YOU to all of those that support our small business! You are appreciated!

7 Reasons Why You Need a Shaving Soap in Your Life

Do you remember your grandfather using a brush to foam up his soap puck before shaving? Maybe you remember this ritual from old Hollywood films? Well, think it’s time to bring back the shaving soap, and it’s not out of nostalgia!

Switching to a shaving soap can give you a much better shave, and it comes with a ton of other benefits. No matter which body part you’re shaving, here are 7 reasons why we think you could use a shaving soap in your life.

1. It Softens Hair

A shaving soap makes shaving so much easier, and one of the big reasons for that is that it softens your hair. When combined with water, the alkalinity of the soap helps open up the hair cuticle, making the hair much softer. This way, every stroke of the blade cuts it more easily, for a cleaner, faster shave!

At Moss Hill, we also add a dose of hydrating glycerin to our shaving soap. This takes the soap’s hair-softening effects a little further and also helps prevent dryness.

2. Excellent Cushion

Unlike regular soaps, shaving soaps are formulated with rich plant-based fatty acids that create a very unique foam. Also known as a “lather,” this foam is fluffy and creamy with a lot of stability.

When you apply it to your skin, it acts as a cushioning layer that helps your razor blade glide more easily over the skin without causing cuts or irritation. It’s essential for protecting your skin while you shave and preventing razor burn.

If your skin is especially dry or sensitive, you can also layer your shaving soap over a pre-shave oil in a matching scent, for even better lubrication.

3. Leaves Your Skin Feeling Great

A well-made shaving soap will include moisturizing ingredients to help restore your skin barrier after you’ve shaved. Shaving is pretty harsh on the skin - it often removes natural oils and some of the top layer of dead skin.

Shaving soap with humectants like glycerin and sorbitol will help reinforce the skin with added moisture, to prevent dryness and irritation. It’ll help your skin feel great rather than tight and dehydrated.

4. Amazing Scents

With some shaving soaps, shaving can double as an aromatherapy treatment. Today’s shaving soap makers create unique and exciting scents that can improve your mood and leave you smelling amazing, even before you’ve applied any cologne or aftershave.

At Moss Hill, we’re always experimenting with fragrances so that our customers can find a scent that fits their style. Currently, our shaving soaps come in two unique scents:

Blue is a clean, refreshing scent with notes of musk, sandalwood, and lemon which work all year round. Bathe in Bourbon® is a little warmer, which we like for winter. It has notes of bourbon and vanilla with a woodsy twist - it’s the perfect winter scent.

5. It’s More Fun

Compared to shaving cream in an aerosol, using a shaving soap requires a little more technique, but that’s a big part of the pleasure.

To use a shaving soap, you need to have a shaving brush on hand. You soak the brush in water and swirl it over the soap to pick up some product. Then, you swirl it some more to create that creamy lather - you can do this in a bowl, in your hand, or even directly on your face!

It’s a really fun process to see how the soap transforms into a fluffy, luxurious foam.

6. More Eco-Friendly

Shaving soaps are great for the environment because they create minimal waste. Unlike creams that have to be kept in canisters or tubes, shaving soaps come in hard pucks that are easy to wrap in just a bit of paper.

If you already have a shallow jar at home, you can upcycle it as your soap holder, or you can buy a shaving soap that comes in a jar the first time, and then switch to purchasing refills. This keeps packaging out of landfills, and as a second bonus, it also saves you a bit of money since refills are so affordable!

7. Supports Artisans

Shaving soaps have been around for centuries. They’re traditional products with an amazing history. While there are some big corporations that produce them, the market largely belongs to artisans.

Switching to shaving soap allows you to buy from small businesses that are often family-run, just like Moss Hill. As a small business, we are able to support and celebrate our community in Louisville by promoting our culture and creating jobs.

Manifold Benefits

With so many benefits to your skin, your mood, and the world around you, we think it’s hard to say no to shaving soap. What do you say, are you ready to add one to your life?

What is that lovely smell?

Why, that lovely smell is Lavender Fields!

It might sound silly, but I can often be surprised by the lovely smells of our products! We have a seasonal soap and candle that has recently been added to our product line called Wildflower, made with our Lavender Fields fragrance. I must admit that I am not one of the biggest Lavender enthusiasts out there, but this fragrance draws me in every time! The candle is hand-poured into a beautiful purple tin and the soap is a laurel leaf shape that fits so nicely in the palm of your hand! While I am not surprised by how lovely they both look, I AM pleasantly surprised when I walk into my bathroom and smell this lovely light scent of the open soap at my sink. Many people will display soaps in their powder rooms or bathrooms with strict edicts that they are for show only. I encourage you to open them from their fanciful packaging and use them! Even while using them, you will get to enjoy their lovely aromas - they still look pretty, too!

Don't Bug Me!

I have got to say that I LOVE summer! I love the warmth, the sunshine, flip flops, outside activities and water! In fact, Olaf from the movie Frozen is a guy after my own heart. He’s a cute snowman and yet he loves Summer! One thing I bet Olaf does not have to deal with in the summer is MOSQUITOES! I am one of those people that mosquitoes just love - can you relate?! If there is a mosquito within a 10 mile radius it will find me to bite! I’ve read that they are attracted to certain blood types, certain smells and even how much carbon dioxide a person emits. Interestingly, only female mosquitoes bite. While reading up on this subject it seems those female mosquitoes are not fond of lemon, eucalyptus or peppermint scents. SO, those are exactly the essential oils we use in our Don’t Bug Me bug spray. Patchouli is also a scent many bugs do not abide, if you are a patchouli fan.

We make our bug spray with those three essential oils and a blend of distilled water and witch hazel. It cools, it deters those mean little biters and it soothes the itches you might already have. It’s easy for me to sing the praises of our bug spray but I am not the only one that has had success using it.

Alyssa’s mom told us that they were riding around in a golf cart with friends one evening and having used Don’t Bug Me they did not get bitten while their friends in other carts did. She comes into the store regularly to restock on her mosquito-fighting Don’t Bug Me.

Another customer of ours will not go to the lake without Don’t Bug Me. She says it is her go to bug spray for bite-protection!

Meet the Family

One of the lovely things about working with friends is that coming to work, isn't REALLY like coming to work! We would like for you to get to know some of our 'work' family...

Kathy & Patty, like the most of us, wear a couple of hats and one of those is being the smiling face you see when you enter our little oasis in the heart of the Butchertown Market. Along with wrapping and packaging, they help us take care of the lovely people that visit our shop.

Kathy and Patty.jpg

Lyn & Emily are a vital part of our Moss Hill family. Their hats include those of: production, customer care, packaging, social media and all around go-to-girls!

Emily and Lyn w names.png

Jeanine & Teri

You've likely read about us in 'Our Story' and even after 40 some odd years of being sister-friends we can't seem to break the habit of dressing alike! Quite by accident these days! Unlike, back in the day, when we would call each other to see what the other was wearing. You know you've done that!! But, here we are randomly appearing at work in similar attire....

Jeanine and Teri w names.jpg

Thank you for taking the time to get to know our Moss Hill family. Stop by and see us sometime, we'd love to welcome you to the family, too!

Pride, Prejudice and Lavender

I LOVE Jane Austen books, my very favorite, like for so many, is Pride & Prejudice. This Jane Austen masterpiece was first published on January 28, 1813. Over 200 years ago – I find that amazing! Jane was only 20 years old when she wrote this beloved book, the same age as another favorite of mine - Elizabeth Bennett. I often think of lavender as the fragrance of that time. Maybe it’s because you see the young ladies with sprigs of it in the 2005 movie version. Maybe it’s because it’s mentioned in the number of adaptations I’ve read about Mr. Darcy and Elizabeth. Either way, lavender is a timeless fragrance and whether you love the scent or not it has been found to be a therapeutic one by many.

When I first came on board here at Moss Hill, I loved the idea of lavender, even if I wasn’t that fond of the smell of it! I didn’t believe all the touting I’d heard about it being calming and relaxing. Well, was I in for a learning opportunity! One afternoon I sat down to eat my lunch and for some reason I just could not hold my head up I was so stinkin’ sleepy!! Come to find out, Jeanine had been blending up some lavender buds in the back area and just the smell of those soothing buds was putting me to sleep! I instantly became a believer in the relaxing properties of the lavender fragrance!

Several years later, with a bit of an anxious young daughter that had difficulty sleeping at night, I remembered my experience at work and discovered that our Relax Roll-On Massage Oil was just the thing. I would use the roller ball to massage the soothing scent into her neck and shoulders, off to sleep she would go!

Whether you’re a fan of lavender or not – it is a timeless scent, a ‘historic’ scent as one of our customers described it to his daughter as he was surprised by her choice, and for some, a relaxing scent. So, in honor of Pride and Prejudice’s publication anniversary, maybe… “it is a truth universally acknowledged that” you should give lavender a try in one of our many products-candles, room sprays, lotions, massage/bath oils or soaps.

Smiles!
